APD's Zone 6 Commander On Crime

In the nearly two months that has been commander of the Atlanta Police Department's Zone 6, he's been to a slew of meetings with community associations and groups to talk about their concerns and trends regarding crime.

Zone 6, which includes East Atlanta, Kirkwood, Reynoldstown and Grant Park among others, has a number of different concerns ranging from auto break-ins in Edgewood to graffiti in Little Five Points to drug dealing in Old Fourth Ward.

Meadows, a 16-year APD veteran, sat down with East Atlanta Patch and this week to discuss concerns in the different neighborhoods and various initiatives he's undertaken to address them.

In a wide-ranging interview, He discussed the return of bike and foot patrols, speeding on Moreland and Flat Shoals avenues, and illegal flea markets and kids soliciting donations at dangerous intersections.

Meadows also gave an update on the early results of the concentrated efforts of tackling crime issues, particularly drug-related incidents on the Boulevard corridor.

Launched in January and spearheaded by District 2 Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall, the includes a dedicated contingent of APD officers whose sole focus is that thoroughfare.

It also includes the creation of a mini-precinct in the Atlanta Medical Center, where the officers will be based. (The mini-precinct is scheduled to officially open April 23, with a special, 10:20 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony.)
