Laptop Bandit Short-Circuited in Edgewood

APD, quick-thinking coffee shop employee and passerby, help nab alleged thief

Atlanta police arrested a Decatur man Saturday afternoon following an attempted snatch and run of a woman's laptop as she was working on it in the Caribou Coffee shop at the Edgewood Retail District.

Antavious Deangelo Monds, 19, was arrested following a foot pursuit by a Caribou employee, a passerby and a police cruiser as he ran down Caroline Street.

He was charged with felony robbery, three counts of simple battery and obstructing an officer.

The arrest follows an snatch and run from an Inman Park coffee shop in which a thief ran in, seized a laptop from a student and ran into a waiting car that sped away.

It's not clear if the two incidents are related, Atlanta Police Sgt. Curtis Davenport said, but they are investigating.

Police gave the following account in the Edgewood incident:

Julia Greenhill was working on her computer at the coffee shop when she said Monds entered Caribou from the Moreland Avenue door.

He snatched her Apple MacBook and ran. Greenhill held on briefly, but eventually let go.

Jerald Baxter, a Caribou employee, gave chase as Monds ran out.

Atlanta Police Ofc. Scott Krawczyk was in his patrol car and began following as Monds turned around to punch Baxter in the chest.

A passerby, , saw the commotion and joined in the chase, tackling Monds.

Monds punched Lassiter in the chest, too, but Lassister maintained his grip until Krawczyk arrived.

The officer had to pepper spray Monds before he finally relented.

None of the parties were seriously injured.
