How Does Crime Stack up in Your Neighborhood?

Year-to-date, the area of the city that includes Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, North Ormewood Park and Glenwood Park saw the largest rise in serious crimes, followed by Kirkwood.

Mayor Kasim Reed paid two visits to East Atlanta Patch communities last week to address their crime concerns.

The mayor, who is seeking reelection to a second term, said violent crime overall is down roughly 18 percent, though in some communities it has increased.

He credits those results with building the police force to 1,968 sworn officers, the highest level in city history. The Atlanta Police Department has hired some 800 policemen and policewomen since Reed took office in 2010, but it's not immediately clear how much of that is a net gain, given retirements, firings and general attrition.

We wanted to see in detail what the crime trends were and what's happened specifically in East Atlanta Patch neighborhoods in the incorporated city limits of Atlanta.

APD gave us the year-to-date crime data (Jan. 1 through Aug. 8), broken by beats within Zones 5 and 6, which cover our communities. APD also gave us the same period from last year to compare, as well as the same time frame from 2009, a year before Reed took office.

APD reconfigured its six zones in December of 2011, but the 2009 figures reflect the zone boundaries as they are now.

The attached PDFs are broken down by beat and further by neighborhoods and include serious crimes such as rape, homicide and armed robbery.

East Atlanta recorded four murders this year, marking a 400 percent increase compared to the zero homicides it had in 2012.

Overall, crime in the neighborhood is actually down seven percent year-to-date.

But crime is up in 10 of the 16 police beats within Zones 5 and 6 that cover East Atlanta Patch communities.

The beat that experienced the highest year-over-year jump was 606, which includes Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown. Serious crimes rose 55 percent overall in that beat.

Pedestrian robberies in Beat 606, for example, jumped 53 percent — 23 incidents this year vs. the 15 reported last year.

Residential burglaries in beat 606 soared 211 percent this year compared to last year, with 56 reported break-ins vs. the 18 tallied in 2012.

Beat 610, which covers the Kirkwood neighborhood, saw the second-largest increase with a jump of 37 percent in overall crime.

Kirkwood has been dogged by burglaries, which account for the spike, with commercial and residential break-ins rising 367 percent and 144 percent, respectively.

The highlights from each beat and the corresponding neighborhoods are below. The full data may be reviewed in the PDFs. (Please note some neighborhoods, like Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward, straddle more than one beat.):
