East Atlanta Crime Report

A burglary, larceny and recovered laptops.

Two crimes — a larceny and a burglary — were reported in the last week of December in East Atlanta, the East Atlanta Security Patrol reports.

The first, which occurred in the 1100 block of Bouldercrest Drive, involves the theft of a washer/dryer set. The crime was reported Dec. 29 but it is believed the former tenants of the home stole the set when they moved out. EASP said.

The second incident was a burglary, which occurred in the 1500 block of Glenwood Ave. It is believed the burglar or burglars broke into the home between Dec. 23 and Dec. 27. The entered by prying open a bathroom window and stole two laptops, a camera, a tool bag with various tools and disc jockey equipment. One of the victims told police some of the stolen items matched that of an advertisement on Craigslist.

EASP said the Atlanta Police Department made an arrest connected to the Dec. 20 burglary of a home on Marbut Avenue. The arrest led to the recovery of several stolen laptops. If you have the serial number, call APD to see if your items are among those that have been recovered.

While it may be a little tedious, law enforcement officials say serial numbers help solve cases and keep criminals in jail.

It's why the Fulton County District Attorney's office relaunched its Electronic Surveillance Serial Number registry earlier this year.

The Fulton County DA's office will maintain the database and in the case of robberies, trace the serial numbers of stolen items that wind up in pawnshops.

"That helps me," Claire Farley, assistant district attorney for Fulton County, said at a September meeting of the Grant Park Neighborhood Association. "I actually win good cases by prosecuting folks when we can trace the serial numbers back. That's what's called evidence."

For those items that don't have serial numbers such as jewelry and other valuable items, take photographs. That not only helps police but also you might need it to file a claim with your insurer.
