Atlanta Police Promise To Work with Livery Industry Following Weekend Cabbie Carjackings

Police looking for three in connection to armed robberies of taxi drivers downtown

Atlanta police say they are working closely with the taxicab industry following two armed carjackings that began in Downtown over the Fourth of July weekend.

"The department will continue to meet with taxicab industry leaders, with an emphasis on raising awareness around the robberies, and preventive measures companies and individual drivers can take to reduce their chances of being victimized," Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos said in a news release.

"In addition to working closely with the taxicab industry, the APD will step up patrols and surveillance of taxi stands throughout the city."

  • On July 1, APD responded to a call around 9:30 a.m. at 46 Boulevard SE in Old Fourth Ward. The taxi driver told police he picked up three men at 121 Baker St. in Downtown. They then robbed him at gunpoint. The driver was suffered a small laceration to his head where one of the robbers placed the gun.
  • A day later, on July 2, officers went to 540 North Ave. NW in West Midtown just after noon. That cab driver told officers three men he picked up at the Omni Hotel in Downtown robbed him at gunpoint. They struck the driver in the back of the head with a gun, causing a deep laceration which required medical attention.

Campos also said APD is working with neighboring police jurisdictions, including Clayton County. That follows a series of taxicab robberies in metro Atlanta, CBS Atlanta News reported.
