UPDATED: Atlanta Police Officer Shot at Edgewood Court Apartments

EDGEWOOD — An Atlanta police officer was hospitalized Saturday after being shot in the face and leg at the Edgewood Court Apartments in what investigators say was an ambush attack.

Officer Christopher L. Smith has since been released from Grady Memorial Hospital, police department spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said early Sunday.

Though police had one person in custody for questioning, "at this time, no arrests have been made involving this incident," Jones said

Smith was working off-duty at the complex at 1572 Hardee St. NE, when shot by a person carrying a shotgun at about 10 p.m.

The Atlanta Police Homicide Unit is investigating.

The Edgewood Court Apartments have long been a source of complaints from surrounding residents and linked to various crime incidents.

Among them:

  • In May, following an incident of alleged police brutality during an arrest, two officers' cars were pelted by bricks when they tried to drive through a scheduled demonstration.
  • In 2010, a cab driver taking a passenger to the complex, was pistol-whipped and robbed by three men laying in wait when he arrived.
  • Also in 2010, a man was gunned down behind the complex.
