Ammonia Leak Shuts Down Edgewood Bakery Business

A portion of DeKalb Avenue closed off temporarily

A defective refrigeration unit leaking ammonia in an Edgewood business, led to the temporary closure of DeKalb Avenue between Whitefoord and Arizona avenues, early Tuesday.

The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department evacuated employees from the Edwards Baking Co. at 1 Lemon Lane NE just before 1 a.m.

Fire officials said the ammonia leak posed no danger to the surrounding residential area.

But plant operations were suspended and a private cleaning contractor, specializing in hazardous materials spills, was brought in to clean up the scene, fire officials said.
