UPDATED: Man Arrested in Little Five Points Police Shooting

Officer was shot at near Moreland and McLendon avenues.

UPDATE: Atlanta police arrested Cameron Christian Maddox, 19, on Friday and charged him with aggravated assault in the shooting of Officer Dexter Toomer. Police said they would not elaborate on a motive for the shooting or release further details because the investigation is ongoing.

Atlanta police are looking for a gunman who shot at an officer Thursday night as he left the 's restaurant in Little Five Points.

Officer Dexter Toomer, who had gone to the eatery at 377 Moreland Ave. for a drink, called for aid, saying he had been shot in the lower left leg.

He did not see who shot him in the the 10:30 p.m. incident.

Toomer, who spent 18 years as an Atlanta Corrections officer before joining APD 1½ years ago, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is in good condition, Maj. Keith Meadows APD Zone 6 commander told East Atlanta Patch.

The officer is expected to be released Friday.

Though police have no leads on a suspect investoigators believe the Toomer was the intended victim of the gunman, who fired shots from a nearby building.
