Lulu sets goals for the New Year

Happy New Year, Everyone!

With 2011 in my rearview mirror, I’m ready to grab life by the paws and have a really good time.

Mom likes to begin each year setting goals for growth and improvement, so I gave her a list of things she could do better this year. (I want more treats, longer walks, and more belly rubs.)

Those suggestions didn't go over too well. Evidently, I was supposed to set goals for myself. Since she brings home the kibble, I made the following resolutions for 2012.

• I will not chase the neighborhood cat, except maybe on weekends.
• I will not have accidents in the house.
• I will not pull the leash during walks, even when I really have to go.
• I will not steal French fries or chicken nuggets from Mom’s nephew. But anything he throws on the floor is fair game! 
• I will use this column in 2012 to help other pets find a forever home.
• I will keep at least one of these resolutions.

Upcoming pet events:
Jan. 7: Cat adoption fair. If you have room for a feline addition, LifeLine Animal Project may have the fur kid for you. Visit PetSmart (875 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, Lawrenceville, Ga. 30043) all week to check out adoptable kittens and cats, then check out the adoption fair from 2 to 4 p.m., Jan. 7.

Jan. 15: Greyhound Meet and Greet. One of my best friends is a greyhound. They make very stylish couch potatoes. If you are interested in learning more about greyhounds, attend Southeastern Greyhound Club meet and greet sessions from noon to 2 p.m., every third Sunday at Petco in Sandy Springs (5938 Roswell Road, SE, Sandy Springs, Ga. 30328).

Jan. 28: Low-cost vaccinations. Did you know that parvo is a severe viral infection that can kill dogs? Treating parvo can cost hundreds of dollars, but you can reduce the risk of exposure with an inexpensive vaccine. A $40 fee covers the exam, vaccinations and two doses of dewormer at LifeLine Animal Project. The vaccinaction clinics are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Decatur location (129 Lake Street, Avondale Estates, Ga. 30002).

Jan. 28-29: Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal show. If you slither to the beat of a different drummer, check out the assortment of arachnids, bearded dragons and snakes on display at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds during Repticon. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12 during the two-day event at the Gwinnett County Fairground (2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville, Ga. 30045).
