City Establishes Annual 'Social Media Day Atlanta'

The day will be held on the last Thursday of each June.

In line with the area's prevalent social enterprise presence, the City of Atlanta declared today that the last Thursday of each June will be "Social Media Day Atlanta." The annual holiday is being instated to recognize how social media affects local business, and will kick off this year at 6 p.m. June 26 at Tongue and Groove, Main St. NE, Atlanta. Organizers invite the public to attend for networking, free food and drinks, and to meet with local social media influencers.

The Social Media Marketing University, a social media training and management firm, submitted the request for the annual day, while Atlanta City Council President Caesar Mitchell sponsored the proclamation, according to an April 17 SMMU press release.

“We live in an exciting time, with opportunities to create and sustain relationships that span the globe,” Mitchell said in the release. "Social media allows us to leverage technology to expand and increase the reach of community engagement."

Multiple social enterprises call Atlanta home including SMMU, plus Insightpool, Badgy, Silverpop, MailChimp, SalesLoft and Social123.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal also expressed his support of "Social Media Day Atlanta."

“The ability of technological innovation to connect businesses, organizations, communities and individuals through cutting-edge online platforms is vital to the advancement of Georgia and our nation,” Deal said in a statement. "I commend Social Media Marketing University for organizing this day and send my best wishes for a successful and enjoyable celebration."
