Is Atlanta A Fashion Disaster?

Travel + Leisure magazine lists Atlantans among nation's worst dressers.

When it comes to fashion forward, it's a given that New Yorkers, Parisians and Milanese set the style trends that the rest of the world follows.

And Atlantans?

Well, let's just say Hotlanta is a hot mess.

So says Travel + Leisure magazine which ranked America's worst dressed people.

Atlanta is ranked No.7 on the magazine's list, as picked by readers. Anchorage, Alaska is ranked the No. 1 worst dressed.

Blame Atlanta's showing on The Real Housewives of Atlanta reality series.

The magazine wrote: "If the flashy reality-TV stars of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are at all indicative of how the rest of Atlanta dresses, it's no wonder our readers ranked it as America's No. 7 least-stylish city. Hotlanta has one of the highest per capita incomes of any southern city, but as the TV show illustrates and the saying goes: money can't buy taste."

True, spend any amount of time at Lenox Square Mall on a given weekend, you're likely to see one fashion faux pas after another.

But to be fair, only two of The Real Housewives of Atlanta's cast members actually live in Atlanta. Fashion model Cynthia Bailey, whose modeling agency is in Glenwood Park, calls Atlanta home (Her husband, Peter Thomas, is an owner of Bar One in Grant Park.)

Attorney Phaedra C. Parks also lives in the city.

The rest of the cast — NeNe Leakes, Kim Zolciak and Kandi Burruss — all live outside the city limits.

So the city may be getting unfairly saddled with the fashion failures of what passes for style outside the Perimeter.

Here's the full list:

  1. Anchorage, Alaska
  2. Salt Lake City
  3. Baltimore
  4. Orlando
  5. San Antonio
  6. Dallas/Ft. Worth
  7. Atlanta
  8. Portland (Maine)
  9. Phoenix/Scottsdale
  10. Kansas City (Missouri)

...seems like an objective and well researched analysis. Next story...

Let those "fashion forward" folks try to walk around downtown on a mid-August day when the temp is 95 and the humidity is 98%. Then go into an office where the air is set to 60 degrees. See how well their styles holds out! Oh, and don't forget about the car ride home after the car has been at the top of a parking garage in the baking sun all day.
