PIKE NURSERIES REVEALS JUICY PLANTING SECRETS FOR SUPER STRAWBERRY SATURDAY ON MARCH 15

In honor of the start of strawberry season, Pike Nurseries invites customers to celebrate the famed perennial fruit during Super Strawberry Saturday! On March 15, customers can enjoy fresh strawberry lemonade and will even receive their own complimentary bareroot strawberry plants. For those without a garden at home, strawberries can also thrive in small containers and hanging baskets – perfect to place on a deck or patio! Pike Nurseries will host a FREE Strawberry Planting and Care Class during the devoted day at 10:00 a.m. to show guests how to successfully plant their strawberries and produce big, juicy treats!

Whether customers plan to use their home-grown strawberries to top their morning cereal, add sweetness to a smoothie or spread in a strawberry jam, Pike Nurseries has the expert tips and tricks to ensure this delicious fruit is planted to perfection.

Find a Sunny Spot

Plant the strawberries in a spot that has well-draining soil and receives full sun (six to eight hours each day).

Pack Them In

Space the plants in the ground about 2-to-3-feet apart and space rows leaving about 1-foot between each one. After digging a hole for each plant, mix the native soil at a 50/50 ratio with E.B. Stone Planting Mix. Remove the plants from their nursery containers and place them in the holes. Then, backfill the holes with the mixed soil and tamp down firmly to remove any air pockets.

Water Well

Water the new strawberry patch thoroughly after planting, and spread a layer of straw or mulch around the plants to retain moisture and cut down on weeds.

Remove to Improve

For ever-bearing strawberries, be sure to remove the first set of flowers to yield bigger berries with the next set. If planting June-bearing strawberries, it is best to remove all the flowers during the first year and wait to let it fruit during the second year.

Strawberries also grow great in containers, hanging baskets and strawberry jars, as long as they receive plenty of sunshine! Be sure to use a nutrient-rich potting soil, like Pike Potting Soil, to ensure proper drainage.
