Election 2013: Archibong, Smith Keep Council Seats, Grant Defeats Muhammad in Schools Race

Natalyn Archibong, the Atlanta City Councilwoman who faced four challengers in a heated race that included her filing a slander lawsuit against two of them, handily won reelection to a fourth term Tuesday.

Archibong, an attorney, won 62 percent of the 4,154 votes cast in the race — little more than twice the votes of her nearest competitor, Christian Enterkin.

Enterkin, a Kirkwood businesswoman who made public safety and municipal red tape in starting businesses central themes of her campaign, received some 25 percent of the votes cast.

At her victory party at the Argosy in East Atlanta, she thanked her supporters and urged them to move forward and to "pull together for our collective greater good."

She also said leadership is about building consensus. To that end, she said she seeks to serve all of District 5 and that her mission in the next four years is to push that theme of consensus-building, particularly around the issues of crime and community engagement.

In other contests, Carla Smith, the incumbent councilwoman, beat her competitors and captured more than three-quarters of the 3,515 votes cast by voters in District 1, which includes Grant Park, Peoplestown, Summerhill and Boulevard Heights.

In the Atlanta Public Schools board race, Leslie Grant, the challenger from Grant Park, defeated incumbent Brenda J. Muhammad with 57 percent of the vote going her way for APS' District 1, which includes Grant Park, Inman Park, Custer/McDonough/Guice and Candler Park.
