What Should Happen with the Former Wesley International Academy Building?

CUSTER/McDONOUGH/GUICE – As Wesley International Academy prepares its new campus at the former Cook Elementary School in Capitol Gateway, the condition of its old home is of concern.

The old campus at 1049 Custer Ave. was Wesley's home since it opened several years ago, but the charter school outgrew its space, necessitating a search for a larger space.

But the move now raises another question and concern regarding the Custer Avenue facility and its physical condition.

Already, the lawn is beginning to be overgrown with weeds and uncut grass. And a brief inspection of the property Monday showed that in at least one spot, a chunk of the perimeter wall is broken.

Under one set of stairs, the dirt seems to have been washed away. Residents surrounding the property have already complained to Atlanta Public Schools officials, though it's a code enforcement issue.

Imagine Schools Inc., the Arlington, Va.-based company that owns the property, and rented it out to Wesley, is now fully responsible for its upkeep.

A spokeswoman did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Monday.

With the building now empty, what should be done with the property? What's your vision for this vacancy?
