The Great Duck Rescue at Springvale Park

INMAN PARK — The little duckling with broken leg has a second chance, now.

Several residents took to Springvale Park Thursday morning to save the little duckling, named Piggy2, which appeared to have a broken leg.

For days, she was seen hobbling around behind her mother and siblings.

Led by Eleanor "Mother Goose" Matthews, the rescuers included Carol Harrison, Oreon Mann, Ben Mitchell and — ahem — a duck hunter, who, for obvious reasons, requested anonymity.

Armed with nets, a bell, a blue towel, a canoe and caring hearts, the rescuers corralled, chased and finally cornered the injured duckling.

Harrison scooped Piggy2 in the blanket and she and Mother Goose took her to Dr. Kevin Fowler, the vet at Inman Park Animal Hospital.

The doctor would later report that Piggy2 did, indeed, have a broken leg. She will need to be confined to a crate until it heals enough for a reunion with his mom and siblings.

Until then, Piggy2 — named for Piggy1, a duck living in Dublin, Ireland — is staying with Mother Goose and her pet duck, Bob.
