A newborn golden lion tamarin died at Zoo Atlanta on Feb. 29, following an accidental fall officials at the Grant Park-based attraction said.
The 4-day-old primate, one of three born to parents Robin and Theo Feb. 25, is the second offspring to die.
Infant mortality is not uncommon in golden lion tamarins, which weigh only around two ounces at birth and are about the size of a small mobile phone.
Native to Brazil’s Atlantic coastal rainforests, tamarins are well-adapted for life in the trees, but falls — even at short distances can — be fatal for tiny newborns.
The remaining infant appears to be thriving, Zoo Atlanta said.
