TipSubmit Mobile, a free application for iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices, allows residents to anonymously submit crime tips to Crime Stoppers from their mobile devices.

“The mobile application adds a new component that makes it easier for the public to provide investigators with information essential to the apprehension of dangerous criminals,” Miguel Sepulveda, director of Crime Stoppers Atlanta, said in a statement. “The anonymous process allows people to come forward with critical tips without the fear of retribution, and feel secure in their safety and anonymity when using these powerful tools.”

iPhone and Android users will be able to submit images and video and engage in real-time two-way communication with Crime Stoppers operators.

Video technology and image transmission is something Atlanta 911 officials are looking into using, too. At a recent with Kirkwood residents, Atlanta Police Department officials said they were studying incorporating those technologies as well as utilizing street cameras, because visuals would help police and fire personnel respond to emergencies faster.

But those initiatives are still in the planning and studying stages.

“Crime Stoppers has become a useful investigative tool for our detectives,” Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said in a news release. “With the popularity of smart phones, an anonymous mobile application can have a tremendous impact in solving and preventing crimes – empowering our citizens to help in the crime-fighting effort.”
