Five Things Happening This Weekend

Black mortgage crisis town hall, biking tips for kids, walking for pancreatic cancer and more

SATURDAY:

  • The National Association of Real Estate Brokers Inc. hosts the State of Housing in Black America Issues Forum at the King Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College, 830 Westview Dr. SW, Atlanta. The forum, which begins at 8 a.m., aims to bring would-be homeowners, real estate experts and others together to discuss the state of housing in minority neighborhoods. The Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., former co-pastor of Ebeneezer Baptist Church, will be among the featured speakers.
  • PurpleStride Atlanta 2011 Be part of a day of inspiration and hope, and help support the fight against pancreatic cancer. Join the Atlanta Affiliate at PurpleStride Atlanta 2011, taking place at Centennial Olympic Park, 265 Park Ave. West NW, Atlanta, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.The Stride is free to survivors and volunteers, $10 for kids and $25 for adults. All proceeds benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The National Cancer Institute estimates 44,030 new cases of pancreatic cancer and 37,660 death will be reported in 2011.
  • Burgess-Peterson Garden Volunteer Day Burgess-Peterson Academy's gardeners needs volunteers to help as they install a small woodland garden near the orchard behind the school at 480 Clifton St. SE. An East Atlanta neighbor donated a collection of plants that will expand students' learning opportunities and bring more beneficial insects and wildlife to the garden. The building starts at 10 a.m.

SUNDAY:

  • TAKE PART IN A FAMILY-FRIENDLY BIKE RIDE The organizers from and Atlanta Bicycle Coalition are hoping to bring families together who bike for a morning of fun with “Kidical Mass – Grant Park Bike Ride.” These rides are comfortable for those just starting out and for those who are biking on city streets for the first time, but don’t completely avoid traffic. This will be a very slow-paced ride, with bell-ringing, noise makers and waving to all who see it. All types of trail-a-bikes, longtails, bikes, trailers, tandems, trikes, and whatever rolls are welcome to participate. Organizers will give away Kidical Mass spoke cards and stickers at the ride start location at 9:30 a.m. as the group gathers. Riders meet at Grant Park, Cherokee Avenue SE & Milledge Avenue SE. The ride runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • A TOAST TO THE CHEF The Grant Park Farmers Market holds bids adieu to its GPFM Chef Series with a demo by Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene in Buckhead. The demo goes from 11:30 to noon at Grant Park, 600 Cherokee Ave., behind the fountain.
