Festivals in Kirkwood, Summerhill and Theatre Performances

Here's what's on tap this weekend funwise for in and around East Atlanta Patch.

Thursday - Sept. 27: The Horizon Theatre Company presents Time Stands Still, the play written by Pulitzer-winning author Donald Margulies. The story focuses on Sarah and James, a photojournalist and foreign correspondent, respectively, who have been together for quite some time and share a passion for chronicling the reality of war. A bomb blast sends them home and it's there they deal with having to chose between domestic calm of family home life and the call of war coverage. The first performance is tonight at 8 p.m. at the Inman Park-based theatre, 1083 Austin Ave. NE. Tickets are $20 each.

Friday - Sept. 28: The Sixth Annual Kirkwood Wine Stroll. This popular favorite, sponsored by the Kirkwood Business Association, is designed to showcase the Kirkwood neighborhood. Participants — it costs $25 in advance and $30 at the door — will get a chance to see the neighborhood's shops, restaurants and hot spots. There will be 18 pouring stations and each ticket holder will receive a souvenir wine glass & program.  The Stroll runs from 6:30 p.m. through 9:30 p.m. and participants may pick up their tickets at 6 p.m. at the Will Call & Ticket Check In, 2033 Hosea L. Williams Dr. You must be 21 years to participate.

— The Wrecking Bar Brewpub in Inman Park is celebrating Oktoberfest by serving up specials such as the serving up specials such as Bernhard's Bavarian Pretzels with grain mustard, Delia's Chicken & Patak Bratwurst with house kraut, Jaeger Schnitzel with German potato salad and Zwetschgenkuchen (plum cake). Of course, Oktoberfest wouldn't be a celebration without raising a stein or two to German beer brewing. The Wrecking Bar celebrates with a limited batch of Oktoberfest beer in addition to pouring its Rauchbier, Kölsch and Hefeweizen.

Saturday - Sept. 29: The first ever Summerhill Fall Fest. The Summerhill neighborhood may be one of the tiniest communities of East Atlanta Patch, but it is rich in history. The neighborhood celebrates its heritage with its first Fall Fest, which residents aim will be an annual event. The festival, which will feature music acts, food vendors and an artists' market, is free and all proceeds are to benefit the Organized Neighbors of Summerhill, the neighborhood association focused on community improvement. A highlight of the Fall Fest will be the Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race, where participants — $5 per racer — get to race one another in their big wheels down Ami Street. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sunday - Sept. 30: The Turner Monumental A.M.E. Church at 66 Howard St. NE is celebrating its 113th anniversary beginning at 11 a.m. with a worship service that will feature guest preacher, the Rev. Marcus Gibson, who is pastor of the Greater Shady Grove MB Church, Columbus, Ga. at the worship service. A fellowship dinner will be served following the morning worship service from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The day of celebration concludes with Turner's own presiding prelate, Bishop Preston W. Williams, 2nd bringing the message at 4 p.m.
