Patch Staff Report

The groundbreaking for the Eastside Trail Gateway will be led by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on Friday, January 17 at 10 a.m.

The Gateway will be an ADA-accessible trail that will connect Historic Fourth Ward Park directly to the two-mile paved portion of the Eastside Trail, running from Inman Park to Piedmont Park.

The path will begin across from the Angier Springs Road access point of the Eastside Trail, and wind down the hill toward the park, connecting at Dallas Street and North Angier Avenue. The design includes landscaping, retaining walls, lighting, and green stormwater infrastructure. The new trail is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.

“The Gateway will link two projects that have had tremendous impact on the surrounding area,” said Reed in a press release. “With 1,000 new housing units under construction in the immediate vicinity and $775 million of new private development within a half mile of the Eastside Trail it is clear these infrastructure improvements are generating substantial returns for the City of Atlanta and its residents.”

The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership Capital Campaign successfully raised private funds for the land acquisition, design and construction of this project. The Trust for Public Land initially purchased the 0.76 acre property to preserve it for public use. Since 2005, The Trust for Public Land has worked with Atlanta BeltLine project partners to acquire strategic properties to develop the Atlanta BeltLine's network of new public parks and multi-use trails circling Atlanta and connecting 45 neighborhoods.

“This project is the result of support from outstanding partners,” said Valarie Wilson, Executive Director of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership. “The Trust for Public Land, the R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation, the John N. Goddard Foundation, and the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation among others were instrumental in realizing this project, as are the private donors that generously fund Atlanta BeltLine projects and programs.”

The groundbreaking will take place on the Eastside Trail, near the Angier Springs access point.
