Union Opens in Old East Side Lounge Spot

New owners want to evoke a cool, relaxed atmosphere to showcase Atlanta's underground scene.

EAST ATLANTA — After a brief closure, the former East Side Lounge has reopened as Union.

The two principals who are majority owners in the club said their vision for Union, which has its grand opening this weekend, is to be a hub for Atlanta's underground scene — without the pretentiousness and attitude.

Union becomes the third concept in the space at 485 Flat Shoals Ave. Before East Side Lounge, it had been the Fountainhead Lounge.

"This very 'not pretentious,' " said Josh Peacock, who is the club's general manager and is better known in the underground world as "Scott Freeze."

"This is very for the people, hence the name, Union."

Peacock and his business partner, Jason Posey — AKA "DJ J.Sol" — also own Atlast Clothing, a streetwear shop located just a few doors down from Union on Flat Shoals Avenue.

Posey, who was a DJ at the East Side Lounge, is promotional director at Union and also will spin tracks.

Both men, who have lived in the East Atlanta area the better part of a decade, say the two ventures are designed to complement each other in terms of highlighting and showcasing the underground street scene in all of its expressions, be it art, music, or fashion.

To that end, Posey said they will look to host local artists, photographers and others in the creative scene, as well as musicians.

East Atlanta, he said, provides the perfect backdrop for that, given its diversity, its place in the underground scene and laid back vibe.
