Georgia-Pacific Building to Get Bathed in Light

DOWNTOWN — When the sun sets Tuesday night, the Georgia-Pacific building at 155 Peachtree St. will be showered in light.

The building, a fixture of the Downtown skyline for nearly three decades, had gone dark for nearly seven years at night because its lighting system was energy inefficient.

But the company, which is a subsidiary of Koch Industries Inc. and maker of Dixie cups and Brawny paper towels, turns on its new, exterior lights, and bring the building's east-facing stair-stepped side in a shower of light.

The company said the new LED lighting will cut energy consumption by 75 percent and costs by 25 percent — from about $55 to $14 a day at the 52-story building.

Those savings are part of a multi-pronged plan for the Georgia-Pacific Center, that aims to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent by 2020 through its participation in the Central Atlanta Progress’ Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge.
