Biodiesel Fuel Station Comes To Edgewood

Atlanta's only retail biodiesel fueling station inside the Perimeter opened June 21 in Edgewood.

The fueling station at 250 Arizona Ave. NE is a partnership between the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Clean Energy Biofuels.

The fueling station is part of the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s I-75 Green Corridor Project, which aims to create the longest alternative fuels corridor in the United States along I-75. Projected to be complete by 2013, it will cover all 1,786 miles of I-75, cross six states from Michigan to Florida.

The Center for Transportation and Environment is the project manager for the corridor's metro Atlanta portion.

CEB's biodiesel is locally sourced, using recovered oils from local food service providers and processing those oils locally using 100 percent solar-powered electricity.

Fuel and America's dependence on energy from foreign sources has been an issue for decades, but motorists have been focused on it in recent months as they've watched gas prices climb higher and higher.

The green energy movement also has consumers and organizations looking for environmentally friendly alternatives.

The San Diego Padres baseball team, for example, said Monday it will reuse cooking oil from food concessions to fuel pressure washers to clean Petco Park.
