Atlanta BeltLine Elects New Chairman

AGL Resources' Somerhalder named to top spot.

The Board of Directors of Atlanta BeltLine Inc. said it elected John W. Somerhalder II chairman Wednesday. Somerhalder a board member since 2009, is chief executive officer of the AGL Resources, and succeeds Beth Chandler, who had been the board's chairwoman since November 2009. Chandler was elected vice-chairwoman.

Somerhalder, who also is chairman of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, will relinquish that title, though he will remain a member of that group's board.

When complete, the $2.8 billion BeltLine will create a 22-mile necklace of parks, trails and transit around the city.

“It is an honor to serve as Chairman for the organization that is implementing one of the most comprehensive, sustainable and transformative projects in the nation,” Somerhalder said in a statement.

“As chairman of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, we worked hard to cultivate strong support from and partnerships with the private and nonprofit sectors. Working with the board and staff of ABI we will build on our successful partnerships and create new ones as we refine a strategy to fully develop the Atlanta BeltLine and all of its potential.”
