Local Artists Decorate Gnomes to Benefit Community Outreach

'Enjoy the sights and scents of spring plants, sip a cocktail, and view garden gnomes of all varieties.'

Tucked into a corner of the garden amid the tulips, the brightly-colored gnomes guard the pink and white azaleas and blue “glory of the snow” in the neighborhood garden– but I get ahead of myself.

On Saturday, May 11, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Cabbagetown Clay and Glass Works and Garden*Hood, are making it easy for you to have your own Gnomes in the Hood and to support a good cause. Enjoy the sights and scents of spring plants, sip a cocktail, and view garden gnomes of all varieties. The event will feature one-of-a-kind gnomes (or “gnomesses”) created by 25 local artists (painters, sculptors) who have joined forces with CCGW’s artists. The unique gnomes will be auctioned off by silent auction with light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the luscious flowering space of Garden*Hood, a neighboring plant and garden center. Gnomes in the Hood will benefit CCGW, a non-profit, cooperative, artist-run studio, and to support their community outreach. CCGW members will be presenting free workshops to local transitional housing programs for women and for veterans.

The Gnomes in the Hood fundraiser coincides with Garden*Hood’s Mother's Day Bouquet Buffet, a yearly tradition where individuals can create the “perfect, container garden for your mom.” Staff of the independent, retail garden center set up a “buffet” of the supplies you’ll need as well as a nursery full of plants from which to choose. Kids of all ages are welcome. The Bouquet Buffet is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12.
