What Should Go Here?: Tech High School

REYNOLDSTOWN — Last year's closure of Tech High School at 1043 Memorial Drive SE added yet another vacant Atlanta Public School building to the city's list of empty properties.

APS had already closed several schools last year following the redistricting drama that gripped the district last year, including Cook Elementary in Capitol Gateway and East Lake Elementary.

APS officials have explored alternative uses for Cook and East Lake Elementary is the temporary home of Coan Middle School students.

Tech's closure wasn't redistricting-related, but school officials said it APS' funding formula for public charters, which a judge ruled illegal, was a factor in the decision to shutter operations.

So now the building, which some former Tech officials said needs some TLC in parts, sits empty, adding to the roster of properties that are vacant, like the former David T. Howard High and Walden Middle schools in Old Fourth Ward.

APS hasn't said what its plans for the property are or whether it wants to keep it long-term.

Do you think it should remain an APS property or should it be sold to a developer for some sort of reuse?

Would something along the lines of Bass Lofts in Little Five Points work or would it make sense for it to be converted into an artists' studio and collective?
