What's Happening Today At The East Lake Farmers Market

Compost tips, pet rock making, and story time with Avondale Estates author, Patti Ghezzi.

Here's what on tap today at the East Lake Farmers Market, which goes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.at the corner of Hosea L. Williams Drive NE and 2nd Avenue SE:

  • Bring out your inner composter: With next week being International Compost Awareness Week, Khari Diop of the East Lake Community Learning Garden, will be on hand to show you how to compost at home. For the expert composters, you can help initiate ELF's new community composting station at its Urban Farm. Bring yard waste, uncooked veggies, peels, and rinds; washed egg shells; oil-free rice or pasta; and live earthworms.
  • Story Time: This week's featured author is Patti Ghezzi. The Avondale Estates freelance writer and journalist will read from her book, "I Never Expected This!" The children's book tells the story of Bailey, a St. Bernard who feels he may be too old to play with a new addition to his human family. The reading is at 10:30 a.m.
  • Kids can make their very own PET ROCK this week!: Right after story time, help your kids make their own low-maintenance pet. You can even bring your own special rock, if you prefer.
  • Community Supported Agriculture: ELF Market has a CSA? Get details here or stop by the ELF Market Table to learn more about keeping your family feasting on fresh veggies all season long. CSA members get 10% off same-day one-time purchase at Oakhurst Market (excluding alcohol).
