The King Center Celebrates the Resiliency of Girls
Atlanta-area girls to attend a special screening of "Girl Rising" on Saturday as part of the Center's five-year Choose Nonviolence Campaign that, in 2014, is focused on empowering women and girls, and in recognition of Women's History Month.
The King Center, in honor of CEO Bernice A. King’s birthday, will hold a special screening of excerpts of the award-winning documentary “Girl Rising” for more than 220 Atlanta-area girls, ages 10-21, on Saturday, March 29.
The 1-4 p.m. screening is being shown as part of the Center’s five-year Choose Nonviolence Campaign that, in 2014, is focused on empowering women and girls, and in recognition of Women’s History Month.
Each excerpt, which showcases the resiliency of young girls throughout the world, will be followed by an interactive discussion led by Fox 5 television anchor Deidra Dukes.
The objectives of the event are to: increase the girls’ awareness that they are global citizens; explore the impact of Choosing Nonviolence as a lifestyle; and, provide a forum for girls to share their life experiences. The program, which is now filled to capacity, will be hosted in The King Center’s Freedom Hall Auditorium.
In announcing the program, Dr. Bernice A. King, who turns 51 on March 28, said, “This experience is designed to educate, empower and inspire young women to confront and overcome the obstacles they face in their struggles to fulfill their dreams and impact the global community.”
“Girl Rising” tells the unforgettable, true stories of nine girls, who confront tremendous challenges and overcome nearly impossible odds, to pursue their dreams. The film features renowned actors telling the girls’ stories, using the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors in an uplifting testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.
