East Atlanta's Iconic "Welcome" Sign Gone

PATCH PIC OF THE DAY

EAST ATLANTA — For years, the "Welcome to East Atlanta" sign beckoned visitors to the funky neighborhood that early gentrification pioneers remember was home to Grant Central Pizza, the former Heaping Bowl and Brew, Burrito Art, the Echo Lounge in the Village.

The East Atlanta Village has changed a lot since then, and now so, too, is the iconic entrance at Moreland and McPherson avenues.

The sign came down as part of the next phase of construction for the East Atlanta Village Streetscape Improvement. East Atlanta resident Beth Hogan snapped these pictures of the dismantling.

The project includes the intersection reconfiguration, lane realignment, and re‐signalization, as well as a mini‐roundabout at the intersection of Flat Shoals and McPherson avenues.

The roadway will be closed from June through November to allow for construction activities.
