Atlanta NAACP Chapter Sponsoring Gun Buyback at Turner Field

The NAACP's goal seeks to get 1,000 guns off Atlanta streets.

SUMMERHILL — Following a year of planning, the NAACP Atlanta chapter plans a gun buyback initiative at Turner Field on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m.

The initiative, which will be held on the Grey Lot at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Central Avenue, coincides with the message of non-violence of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

King's birthday is Jan. 15. The assassinated civil rights leader would have been 85.

"We are not asking any questions, we just want the guns off the street," said R.L. White, NAACP Atlanta chapter president.

The NAACP is looking for operative guns:

  • 22 calibers
  • shot guns
  • assault weapons
  • rifles
Inoperative guns also will be accepted for gift card exchanges.
