Are You Up To The Fourth Ward Challenge?

Who doesn’t like a nice two (or three) heaping scoops of Jake’s Ice Cream?

Today you don’t need to feel guilty about indulging in the frozen sweet treat because Jake Rothschild has created a new ice cream concoction dedicated to the Old Fourth Ward.

It’s part of the Fourth Ward Challenge — a scavenger hunt competition running from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today in the neighborhood.

“There are 31 clues that people have to decipher,” said Matthew W. Garbett, president of the Fourth Ward Neighbors, an association that represents the portion of O4W bounded by DeKalb Avenue, Boulevard, the Atlanta BeltLine and Freedom Parkway.

Each team will have to take pictures as they solve the clues to go on to each successive stage of the hunt.

Participants will work in teams of two and 50 have signed up so far.

The monies raised will go toward purchasing trashcans for the neighborhood, Garbett said.

The starting point: Irwin Street Market.

“All of the local businesses have been great about challenge checkpoint clues,” event co-organizer Cyerra Crumrine said, noting key sponsors include Edgewood Corner Tavern, Icebox, the Epstein Group, Voss Violins and the Masquerade.

“It’s been interesting because a couple of years ago, we didn’t have the business to be able to hold an event like this.”

The top three teams get $200, $100 and $50, respectively.

After the hunt, Rothschild will unveil his new ice cream ode to the O4W at the Irwin Street Market.
