Alpha Phi Alpha to Celebrate 107 Years at Greater Piney Grove Church

PINEY GROVE — The Metro Atlanta Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. will gather at the Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church, 1879 Glenwood Drive on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, to culminate the celebration of the 107th year of the founding of their organization.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. The Rev. Dr. William E. Flippin is the senior pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church, and a fraternity member.

Men of Alpha Phi Alpha will come from following alumni chapters for the 11:45 a.m. ceremony, which include:

  • Eta Lambda (Atlanta)
  • Nu Mu Lambda (DeKalb County)
  • Omicron Mu Lambda (Cobb County)
  • Rho Sigma Lambda (Henry County)
  • Rho Kappa Lambda (Gwinnett County)
  • Omicron Phi Lambda, (South Fulton County)
  • Pi Gamma Lambda (Clayton County). 
  • College chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha include Alpha Rho (Morehouse College), Zeta Mu (Georgia State University), Nu Mu (Georgia Institute of Technology), Tau Epsilon (Clayton State University) and Tau Zeta (Kennesaw State University). 

“There are more than 500 active member of Alpha Phi Alpha in our metro chapters; but there are thousands of Alpha brothers who live in this area,” said Flippin.

“We are inviting and encouraging all of the men of Alpha to come to Piney Grove, with their families, and get into the spirit of service of Alpha.

The Founder’s Day program, chaired by Brother Marshall Taggart of Omicron Phi Lambda Chapter, will begin Wednesday, Dec. 4 and includes campus tours of Clark Atlanta University at 3 p.m. and Morehouse College at 4:30 p.m. It also includes a 6 p.m. candlelight vigil at Morehouse's King Chapel. The day is set to conclude with the Brotherhood Banquet at Clark Atlanta University Student Center at 7 p.m. Tickets for the banquet are $25 per alumni brother and $10 per undergraduate brother.

  • A Public Policy Forum on Thursday, Dec. 5 at the School of Medicine at Emory University on the subject of the Healthcare Act
  • The networking mixer held on Friday, Dec. 6 (5-9 p.m.) at the Lowes-Atlanta Hotel and an evening at the Reign Nightclub at 9 p.m.at 1065 Peachtree Street NE.
  • On Saturday, Dec. 7, the service project with the Favor Academy of Excellence, located at 408 Sawtell Avenue SW, will take place at 10 a.m.
