SWEET AUBURN — A dynamic group of young business, community, education and entertainment professionals have joined forces to launch a $100,000 social media campaign aimed at bringing renewed interest and support to Atlanta’s historic Auburn Avenue, a district many consider to be the birthplace of the civil rights movement.

Last year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation Society placed Auburn Avenue on their list of 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. “Reading this article was quite disturbing,” says Kimberly Wilson, Executive Director of the campaign. She adds, “I think one of our main concerns is that so many of today’s generation are disconnected to the global relevance and historic significance of Auburn Avenue.

After much debate and several brainstorming sessions, the group decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo (an international cause-related crowdfunding platform) that allows many people to give small amounts and together make a huge impact on various causes. Additionally, the team wanted to create something that would touch the entire community and beyond….not one event, but an engaging set of experiences thus, creating the Sweet Auburn Experience (SAX).

SAX is a series of 25 events for all ages that will take place during Black History Month (February 2014). The experience is intended to bring awareness to the rich cultural heritage of Auburn Avenue and to help find solutions to the issues currently plaguing the district and community. The goal of SAX is to reflect, respect and revitalize this deeply distressed community in the areas of civil and human rights, business, education, technology, entertainment, sports, health and wellness.
