Hari Jones, Noted African-American Civil War Expert, Lectures Tonight at Atlanta Cyclorama
This Thursday, August 18, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM, African-American Civil War and Atlanta History experts lend their voices as part of The City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ four-year-long American Civil War Program series opener, “The American Civil War: One-Hundred-Fifty Years Later” in a lecture called “From Civil War to Civil Rights”.
Hari Jones, assistant director and curator of the African American Civil War Freedom Foundation and Museum in Washington, D.C. joins Alexis Scott, Publisher of the Atlanta Daily World and featured commentator for Fox 5 Atlanta’s “Georgia Gang”, and Dr. Gordon L. Jones, Senior Military Historian and Curator at the Atlanta History Center. The lecture will take place at The Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, (located next to The Atlanta Zoo) at 800 Cherokee Avenue SE Atlanta, GA 30315. Admission is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Hari Jones, a former Captain in the United States Marine Corps, is a highly sought-after lecturer and content adviser for African American military service and Civil War exhibitions such as the National Park Service (NPS) museum at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Tuskegee, Alabama; the American Civil War Center exhibit “Take Our Stand”; and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) exhibit “Discovering the Civil War”. His expertise was also requested from Television outlets, The History Channel, Public Broadcasting System (PBS) History Detectives, and NBC's acclaimed alternative series "Who Do You Think You Are?”
The first leg of the Civil War series runs Now through August 27 with an added Civil War history vignette on September 24. The series is designed to inspire new conversations and better understanding of the war’s influence on modern-day Atlanta. Noted historians, author talks, book signings and storytelling through performance, exhibits and film screenings to continue each summer; leading up to the 2014 Anniversary of the “Battle of Atlanta”.
