UPDATED: Sweet Auburn Music Fest This Weekend

Aim of music festival is to showcase Auburn Avenue businesses.

UPDATE: Readers, because of weather concerns, the music fest is postponed and is scheduled for the weekend of May 18. by Maynard Eaton SWEET AUBURN — The landscape of Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn festivals has changed in recent history, with the emergence of an additional group of festival producers – the Muhammad family. Their concept — the Sweet Auburn Music Fest — aims to re-capture the essence of the original Sweet Auburn Festival in full swing during the 70s and 80s. That original festival essence, believes the Muhammad family, is compellingly captured through their Sweet Auburn Music Fest’s focus on family, music, culture, and community involvement. “I was involved when the festival first brought thousands of people to Auburn Avenue and …

Good Food, Good People: East Atlanta Patch Wants Your Restaurant Stories

Send us your stories about how these people make your community stronger, whether it's through their good deeds, hard work, great food, or just their friendly smile.

You know that bursting-at-the-seams rush of excitement you get when you discover a little-known eatery? The kind you can hardly contain to the point where you're texting your friends with still-greasy fingers? We recently received an e-mail in that spirit from a neighbor: An excellent hidden gem found right at our doorstep, Chateau de Saigon, just north of the intersection of Dresden on Buford Hwy (on the left). The restaurant itself is sparsely decorated and sits at the end unit of a small strip mall but the food is excellent, a combination of French and S.E. Asian cuisines. And its affordable. My friend and I ordered two appetizers, two wines and split and entree and the bill was around $40. In case you haven't noticed, we here at …

Walmart is Anchor Tenant for Glenwood Place Project

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. officials met with the South East Atlanta Business Association's board to talk about the project at 800 Glenwood Ave. in Grant Park.

Surprise! It's a Walmart. The retailing giant was long rumored to be the anchor tenant for Fuqua Development LP's massive redevelopment project at 800 Glenwood Ave. For its part, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., only said it had had discussions with Fuqua representatives, but that nothing had been finalized. But Creative Loafing reports the South East Atlanta Business Association confirmed the world's largest retailer is to be the anchor tenant for the project, which would transform the the 20-acre site into a retail complex that would include 197,590 square feet of retail and parking for 1,201 motor vehicles. "The contact from Walmart representatives with SEABA was some of the first public acknowledgment of the identity …

Streetcar Project Begins to Take Shape

Rail line to come online in 2014.

OLD FOURTH WARD — The construction crunch on Edgewood Avenue is beginning to give way to what eventually will be the Atlanta Streetcar. The $90 million project, which is expected to go into service next year, will create a rail route that links Old Fourth Ward to Centennial Olympic Park Downtown. Last week we saw rail lines being laid in the ground. Light rail is a popular mode of transportation in many world cities including Los Angeles, Boston and Amsterdam and Berlin, among others. When built and functional do you think it will prove to be popular with metro Atlantans as well as tourists? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
