'Enjoy the sights and scents of spring plants, sip a cocktail, and view garden gnomes of all varieties.'
Tucked into a corner of the garden amid the tulips, the brightly-colored gnomes guard the pink and white azaleas and blue “glory of the snow” in the neighborhood garden– but I get ahead of myself. On Saturday, May 11, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Cabbagetown Clay and Glass Works and Garden*Hood, are making it easy for you to have your own Gnomes in the Hood and to support a good cause. Enjoy the sights and scents of spring plants, sip a cocktail, and view garden gnomes of all varieties. The event will feature one-of-a-kind gnomes (or “gnomesses”) created by 25 local artists (painters, sculptors) who have joined forces with CCGW’s artists. The unique gnomes will be auctioned off by silent auction with light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in …

'This is the first major festival in the recently completed Historic Fourth Ward Park that runs adjacent to The Masquerade club.'
The Shaky Knees Music Festival at Historic Fourth Ward Park and the Masquerade Music Park continues today. The two-day festival will feature 28 bands across three outdoor stages as well as local food trucks, artisans and vendors. You may still purchase tickets at Ticketmaster. Today's lineup includes "Best New Artist” Grammy nominees, The Lumineers, as well as the Drive By Truckers and Oberhofer, among others. The show is curated by longtime Atlanta promoter Tim Sweetwood. “I’m not trying to appeal to every music fan or break into territory that has already been well covered by other festivals,” Sweetwood said. “I’d love for people to be able to find enough of a connection in the lineup to be familiar with several of the artists. But I …

UPDATE: Readers, because of weather concerns, the music fest is postponed and is scheduled for the weekend of May 18. by Maynard Eaton SWEET AUBURN — The landscape of Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn festivals has changed in recent history, with the emergence of an additional group of festival producers – the Muhammad family. Their concept — the Sweet Auburn Music Fest — aims to re-capture the essence of the original Sweet Auburn Festival in full swing during the 70s and 80s. That original festival essence, believes the Muhammad family, is compellingly captured through their Sweet Auburn Music Fest’s focus on family, music, culture, and community involvement. “I was involved when the festival first brought thousands of people to Auburn Avenue and …

by Karen Heim Please join the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons at the Inman Park Festival Parade on Sat., April 27 for their annual attempt at the Gnome March World Record. The Gnomes began marching in the Festival Parade in 2007 to bring attention to important Gnome issues: gnomophobia, dandelion genocide, legalizing weeds, etc. In 2010, the Krewe and the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club attempted a World Record of the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Garden Gnomes (a/k/a Gnome March). Signatures of 108 Gnomes were earnestly verified by Julia Stedman and Amy Carter. The Guinness Book of World Records denied the Gnomes' claim, stating that the Gnome March was not an "established competition." They then turned around and awarded it to a …

The Bronx native is the owner of the Little 5 Points Pharmacy.
by Karen Heim INMAN PARK — The Festival Committee is pleased to announce Ira Katz, R.Ph., as this year’s Parade Grand Marshal. Ira is the owner and pharmacist of the Little 5 Points Pharmacy, serving the community since February 1981. Here are some testimonials from the neighborhood made prior to the announcement of his selection as Grand Marshal: “What other pharmacy will let you pay ‘later’ when you rush in without cash, credit card or check? Ira knows you will return with money. He also lets you pick up prescriptions for friends and neighbors. Since he knows your friends and neighbors, he trusts you.” “Twenty years ago, when my best friend was fighting his unsuccessful battle against AIDS, Ira was there to help. Back then, insurance …

Winner Stacie Stamper: "Everybody has a way to give."
The winner of the Patch Easter PEEPs contest is a diorama that shows a little marshmallow figure in a hard hat helping to build a home while other PEEPs cheer him (or her?) on. The entry by Stacie Stamper honors the work of the Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which helps support the nonprofit’s mission to provide decent housing for low-income people around the world. "That's so exciting. How fun is that?" Stamper said when she learned that her entry had won. Second place goes to Martin Burrow of Winder, who used jelly beans and a glass jar to create a colorful PEEPs floral arrangement.
