Zone 6 Officers Working Hard Against Crime Spikes

Total arrests in Zone 6 are up 44 percent, year-to-date.

I feel that it's extremely important that I address some issues relating to crime in Zone 6. Crimes have started to occur in areas where we historically have not had problems, but the men and women in Zone 6 have worked very hard to correct this problem.

I would like to share these numbers with Patch readers:

  • Three weeks ago Zone 6 officers arrested six burglars and two robbery perpetrators.
  • Two weeks ago six individuals were arrested for an automobile larceny and three burglars were arrested as well.
  • Last week three burglars and two robbery perpetrators were arrested.
  • So far this week, officers have arrested two individuals for committing snatch thefts at the Starbucks in Little Five Points.
  • So far this year, Zone 6 has realized a 44-percent increase in total arrests.

Unfortunately,it is not always practical for us to release information on some of our arrests because of the need for investigator followup, to show photographic line-ups and collect additional evidence related to the crimes.

I completely understand everyone's frustration and I share your concerns about the potential for violent behavior occurring in this community. Please know that our officers will work very hard to prevent that from happening. Also, I would encourage everyone to pay close attention to the Atlanta Police Department's "See Something Say Something" campaign.

Many of our citizens see things they feel are not important but we strongly encourage you to bring this issues to our attention. I would also like to thank each of you for your continued support of the men and women in Zone 6.

Thanks.

Mr. Meadows, a major with the Atlanta Police Department, is commander of Zone 6, which includes the East Atlanta Patch communities of Benteen Park, Candler Park, Glenwood Park, Grant Park, Inman Park, North Ormewood Park, Ormewood Park, East Atlanta, East Lake, Lake Claire, Edgewood, Kirkwood, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Old Fourth Ward, Boulevard Heights, Woodland Hills and Custer/McDonough/Guice.

Now if we can just get Fulton County to keep perpetrators locked up, we'll be in good condition. Officers work too hard to catch criminals, unfortunately, they're back out of Fulton County jail within the next couple of days, sometimes hours :(

Last night I went out to my car around midnight to find one guy in my car and another trying to get in my neighbor's car. I ran back in, called 911, and had three APD cars in the area faster than I have ever thought possible (~1-5 minutes for all three). The perps were not caught, but the response was very much appreciated and encouraging (and, hopefully, discouraging to the perps). Thank you, Major Meadows and APD.

In the early 2000's, I had two similar incidences where an officer never even showed up, much less in a timely manner.

I should note there was one snafu last night that needs to be addressed. I'm in Grant Park, but Dekalb County answered the 911 call. The transfer only took ~10-15 seconds, and may or may not have affected the results. But, you have to think that in some instance(s) that 10-15 seconds could be significant.

Hey, Jason: Were you calling from a mobile phone? If you were, it might have pinged to the nearest cell tower, which might be in DeKalb explaining why it was routed to DC911. Still it's strange, 'cause Grant Park is one or two neighborhoods away from the DeKalb County line.

Yep, but I've never heard of that happening near my house.

Just now, we awoke to our dog barking wildly at something outside, to find a car parked right next to our driveway and a figure dashing across the yard as my husband pinged his car alarm on. We called the police 10 minutes ago and are still waiting on a responder.

Katie

I am sorry, did an officer show up to your call?
