What Should Go Here: Ponce City Market

What businesses would you like to see open at Ponce City Market?

Construction at Ponce City Market is moving along quickly.

Developers expect the project to be complete in late 2013.

What would you like to see open at Ponce City Market? Tell us in the comments!

As the largest adaptive reuse project in Atlanta’s history, Ponce City Market  — bounded by the BeltLine trail, Glen Iris Drive and Ponce de Leon and North avenues — will restore 1.1 million square feet of the historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. building to create a vibrant urban centerpiece.

When complete, Ponce City Market will combine 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, including a central food hall, 450,000 square feet of Class-A loft office space and approximately 250 residential lofts on a 16-acre site.

It also will include a new pedestrian bridge that will link the interior courtyard and public market directly to BeltLine trails.

Great Szechuan with take-out and delivery, in addition to seating. A local brew pub type of restaurant. Really good Indian food. All made somewhat family friendly. A reasonably priced, healthy breakfast and lunch place. If the 'food hall' is like one in a mall, that would be very bad. No fast food junk. Businesses should relate to the parks and playgrounds across the street, in part, so people can make an afternoon out of going there.

Hip gift shop with broad price spectrum - and some local artists.

A great book store. I miss Borders and don't like Barnes and Noble.

A cool shoe store.

Maybe some artists booths rented out at a discount, like the "Torpedo Factory" in VA. Places where you can take little classes, shop, and watch the artists work.

I like the idea of a small(?) Target. Would help with people actually living on site or nearby. What the area needs is people, not just visitors.

How about the same generic big box retailers and cheesy chain restaurants that permeate Atlanta and truely make this city "Worldclass."

A good seafood market where you can take home fresh seafood or sit down and have prepared seafood on the premises. Also, a good meat market with cheeses, etc. A Williams Sonoma store or similar with cooking classes that will use the food gathered at the meat/seafood/produce stores that can be found in Ponce City market.

a local artist gallery, a "chapter 11" style book store would be great and a really nice flower market with loose and arranged flowers, similar to the ones you see all over Manhattan...even bodegas have great flowers in NYC.

And a tennis shop. Closest tennis shop in our area is in Ansley Mall I believe.

Definitely a bookstore. REI is also a cool idea, especially next to the Beltline. Most important - keep the urban feel of the building, including the retail and residential interior spaces - it should NOT feel like a suburban mall, but rather an urban market.

This will give you an idea of what type retail to expect. The company developing the Ponce project also did this one:

REI was rumored about a year ago. Don't know if they'll be able to make it happen.

I hope they stay away from the typical crap that tends to be the Targets, Walmarts, etc. This is a chance for Atlanta to be world class, a place for residents to come and get services and products that cannot find elsewhere, and a place to draw visitors. It should have a great seafood market, a great NYC style Deli. How about some art galleries and a space for entertainment.

REI with all the demo areas (climbing wall, bike and hiking trail, etc), business center, bowling, microbrewery, lots of little nooks for people watching, event spaces of various sizes, local art retail, book store, corner market type place for people living there, affordable residential space, theater.

Considering Jamestown is also the developer for Chelsea Market,, they ARE going to make sure to create similar quality in retail, shops, restaurants as what are in Pike Place Market in Seattle, Ferry Building in SF, and Chelsea Market in NYC. If you haven't been on a tour I HIGHLY encourage you to sign up for one. I'm excited to see what other sort of places will pop up around the areas surrounding the site as well - with an anticipated expansion of the housing near O4W Park I'd like to see the shopping center across the street reconnect with Monroe and redeveloped to better focus on the Beltline development as well.

Please make the retail similar to the Chelsea Market, but with better bathroom facilities. Jamestown did is fantastic job otherwise. A Vintage store, gelato shop, amazing fish monger, real bakeries can all be found there. It also connected to the high line park. It sounds similar to what is happening here. I just hope they get the right retail. I think it's a good start with the Dancing Goat coffee. I rode my bike there on Saturday for a cup and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

The ferry market in San fransico has a great feel and vibe to it, with local food and produce each weekend. In madrid there is an amazing market, mercado de San Miguel, that has an amazing wine bar, small plates, and produce providers.... The design would be great for the rooftop! As the design in Madrid combine old w the new!

Oh and if the fitness center on the top is only for residents...a LA Fitness would be great. Really hate that Midtown traffic. We need one in the area. Ideally...Edgewood would be a great spot.

Sushi restaurant. Wine bar. Jamba Juice. Lifetime Fitness. Fresh seafood and meat markets. Farmers market(s) on weekends. Cook's Warehouse or Viking or some other store with cooking school. Hair salon. Nail spa. (Free) shuttle from the North Ave MARTA station.

Most of these recommendations seem rather pedestrian (pardon the pun!) to me. Maybe I'm a little cynical, but I feel the Atlanta market is already saturated with these types of stores. Do we really need or want another REI, more pizza joints, gift shops, hair/nail salons, etc.?

If you live south of 85N and particularly in the hoods immediately surrounding this project....hells yeah we do!! It will beat the heck out of fighting terrible traffic to get to other retail centers, especially Buckhead, just for those "pedestrian" activities.

I like the idea of local artist markets, but not kiosks selling garbage like underground. And something needs to be done about the aggressive panhandlers that hang around under the bridge, not referring to the people waiting for contractors to pick them up, but the groups of men mulling around under the bridge. I've had someone follow me down the street from there until I was so intimidated I actually handed him the leftovers I was carrying, and last week someone screaming so loud at me as I walked by it totally creeped me out, even though it was broad daylight. There are some police presence issues that could be drastically improved upon.

A couple of men's and women's clothing boutiques. Maybe something local like Bill Hallman. I think there is a hole in the Atlanta market right now for a casual, locally owned/run store that sells men's clothes. Maybe something like Need Supply Co. in Richmond, Virginia?

I would like to see places for intown residents, not necessarily destinations "for visitors". If the locals flock to it, the visitors will come if that is what you want. Agree w comment about having a small Target. And great bagels like used to be available a long time ago in VAHI. And not everyone wants or needs more boutiques; there are tons on Highland 1/2 mile away. Basically, I want to USE this market, not come to look at it.

Top ten things I'd put in my Ponce City Market:
10) Local, national and international retailers
9) Classes (art, cooking, martial arts, theater, etc)
8) Old-world-style market
7) Roof-top bar/lounge
6) Public recreation (tennis, basketball, volleyball, racket ball, roller blading, etc)
5) Artist Studios, Art Galleries
4) Rooftop wellness/fitness facility
3) Outdoor performance space
2) Mix of affordable and high-end residential
1) Seriously, local dining options ONLY

Do y'all who are proposing all these different types of businesses realize how long it's gonna take to completely build out 1.1 million square feet? You know, I always try to be optimistic, like Steve Perkins, but this project will be twenty years in the making and a good percentage of us will not even be living in Atlanta then and a good portion of the others will have given up on it and moved on to something else. This is not a "now project", something that we're going to enjoy......it's for a future generation, your children perhaps or your grand-children. I have a lot of happy memories of the old Sears Store that operated in that building for years, looking at all the wonderful items that I couldn't afford then and then walking across the street to the Ponce de Leon Ballpark and taking in an Atlanta Crackers Ballgame which was always exciting. I prefer my memories over what might, might come, one day or perhaps, never.

Yes, a great mom and pop record store (that even sells vinyl). Like Chicago's Dusty Groove. Also maybe an intimate performance space and/or jazz club (real jazz, no smooth jazz please). Maybe a seasonal rooftop restaurant like Bklyn's - Havana Outpost, community seating, music and overall fun atmosphere. A real NY style deli would be great (i.e. Katz Deli). A big beautiful Apple Store, i can't believe Atlanta does not have an intown Apple Store. Maybe one with a small auditorium like the one on Prince Street in Soho. I've taken a many of classes there, and it just used to be a cool place for a nerd such as myself to hang out.

I'd like to see lots of car services (wash, Pep Boys, DMV, etc.) Instead of waiting, you could shop while your vehicle is serviced. It would be even better if they could work together. So, you could drop off your car, and come back with new tires, a wash, and registration after shopping. This would really give people a reason to spend a lot of time and money at the place.

Some new ideas after learning more about the space. 1) An Uncle Maddio's. Yes, I know we have a lot of pizza places already but I don't think it would be complete without a pizza place. 2) An idea for the bigger stores...H&M. 3) A Panera Bread/ Atlanta Bread/Zoe's Kitchen. Or even a Bruegger's Bagels since I hear they are moving back to Atlanta.
