What Should Go Here?: Former Goodwill Space

Vacant lot is used for overflow parking for nearby golf course, but is there a better and higher use for the land?

Former Glenwood Avenue Goodwill Site
How should the site that once was home to Goodwill Industries on Glenwood Avenue and East Lake Boulevard be repurposed?

The lot at 2201 Glenwood Ave. near the East Lake Publix shopping center had been the former home of a Goodwill Industries thrift store.

Opened in 1972, the site was the first that Goodwill Industries of Atlanta built from the ground up.

Besides the store, the facility also included a career center and a donation center.

But the Goodwill shut down the sprawling facilty a few years ago. Subsequent to the closure, the building came down.

The parking lot still gets use, particulary when there are events at the East Lake Golf Club that require overflow parking.

Otherwise, it remains a vacant site.

How would you like to see it redeveloped?

What's your vision for this vacancy?

It would nice to see a decent shopping center go in there, the ones like at the edgewood shopping center. Perhaps more restaurants for the East Lake area and haircut places. That area with all the liquor stores and vagrants could use an uplifting...maybe even mix-residential/mix business place.

a neighborhood Shopping Center. There aren't enough good restaurants on this side of 20, unless you go into Oakhurst.

Could some one please explain to me the "need" for another shopping center less than 2.4 miles from the one at Edgewood Retail District?

@Earl, I see what you mean. Maybe not exactly the same style as Edgewood, but that area needs a revitalization BADLY!! There should be better commercial and residential options for that side of 20.

What would you suggest instead of retail?

For one, I'd plant some trees on the traffic islands. That thing looks like nothing but a heat sink. Two, I'd consider not developing it, but using it as the official spot for weekend art festivals or an expanded ELF location. Not every parcel in Atlanta needs to be developed!

I think this site was to be part of a larger assemblage of land by one of the Cousin's non-profits. Think it connects to a larger parcel of land behind it that runs parallel to 2nd Ave - All in unincorporated Dekalb County.

At one time, there was mention of annexing the land to the City of Atlanta to allow for Drew Charter to place a charter high-school there. Looks like they might be using part of the golf course / green space, instead.
