Snow White Revisited

"Snow, Glass, Apples" gives a modern twist to a fairy tale favorite

We all know the classic story of "Snow White," the princess targeted for death by her stepmother, ultimately being saved by a prince's kiss.

"Snow, Glass, Apples" written by English novelist Neil Gaiman, takes the popular fairy tale and reshapes it to tell the story from the point of view of the wicked stepmother.

This version serves as the foundation for a stage adaption by Atlanta director Lisa Stock.

The play, which will be performed on the grounds of the East Atlanta Farmers Market, explores the theme of not following one's instincts and what can happen as a result.

With Snow White being something akin to a supernatural vampire, it's definitely darker than the Disney version familiar to most. But it's closer to the older variations of the story such as the version written by the Brothers Grimm.

"It harkens back to some of the earliest forms of the fairy tales which were set in very brutal worlds," Stock said. "They were really about survival and preservation."

The play, which stars Victoria Hay as the queen/evil stepmother, Carrie Anne Hunt as the princess, and Josh Henry as the prince, runs from Aug. 24th through the 28th at the farmers market.
