Problem Intersection: Metropolitan Avenue and Metropolitan Place

Stop signs designed to regulate traffic flow, routinely ignored by speeding motorists.

Perhaps with the exception of the red light cameras at Boulevard and Freedom Parkway, it seems traffic signals and stops signs are mere suggestions and routinely ignored.

Such is the case at Metropolitan Avenue and Metropolitan Place in East Atlanta.

The intersection sits at the East Atlanta Post Office.

Motorists speed down Metropolitan Place, which runs to the side of the post office, and they zoom down Metropolitan Avenue.

Though there's a stop sign for motorists on Metropolitan Place, they breeze right past it as do some post office patrons who ignore the stop sign coming out of the Post Office's lot.

East Atlanta Patch reader Suzanne Fleet said that intersection has been problematic for years.

"I live on Metropolitan and every single day, I fear for my life (and that of my kids and husband) as we try to make our way past the post office without getting t-boned," she said.

"Actually, every intersection on Metropolitan is like that. People consider the stop signs mere suggestions as they just barrel on through. But the post office is the worst.

"No one ever looks at all when they leave the post office and pull out onto Metropolitan. I've lived here 4 1/2 years and I've almost been hit on a daily basis. Seriously!"

I don't understand why you buy a house next to a post office and then complain about the traffic. hmmm

When turning onto Metropolitan from The Post Office, there is always an SUV parked there. Along with the hedge, you cannot see to pull out. So you have to hit the gas to make sure you make it. Solution. Cut down the bush and put a no parking sign in front of that house on the corner.
