Patch Question of the Day: Should APD Loan Officers To Jurisdictions In Other States?

APD to send 64 officers to Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention in September.

Charlotte plays host to the Democratic National Convention this September.

But the host city will be getting a little help with law enforcement during the convention — which runs from Sept. 4 through Sept. 6 — including from the Atlanta Police Department.

APD, which has been undermanned for several years, is sending 64 officers to the convention, Fox 5 Atlanta reported late last week. (The department also is sending personnel to assist with the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.)

To be sure, police departments and fire departments often help other jurisdictions when there's a need or emergency.

During the G8 Summit on Sea Island in 2004, APD and other metro Atlanta police agencies sent personnel to help with security.

The department, which is still 85 officers short of its goal of 2,000, told Fox 5 those on-loan supervisors and patrolmen and women could return to Atlanta in case of an emergency.

That may give little comfort to residents of Cabbagetown, Inman Park, Reynoldstown and other East Atlanta Patch neighborhoods that have seen a sharp increase in some unnerving crime incidents.

Several of the most serious crimes are still unsolved and some residents are considering moving to the suburbs or taking up arms from fear of being victimized.

What do you think of APD's decision to send officers to Charlotte?

  • Should APD put its officers on loan to other jurisdictions?

    • Yes. They're only sending 64 officers. That still leaves us with a department of more than 1,800. Atlanta won't be left unguarded.

    • No. If Charlotte needs help, they need to hire private security. I pay taxes to get city services, not to have those services go to help other cities in other states.
