Man Charged With Murder in Toddler's Death
Medical examiner rules Michael Weeks' death as a homicide.
The man watching his fiancée's little boy on Saturday while she ran some errands has been charged with the child's death.
Devon Sawyer, 23, is charged with murder and child cruelty, DeKalb County Police Department spokeswoman Mekka S. Parish, told East Atlanta Patch. He turned himself in to authorities Monday night around 11 p.m.
"Based on the medical examiner's findings, the child's death was ruled a homicide," Parish said. "The exact nature of the injuries is not being released at this time."
Michael Weeks, who was only 2, was pronounced dead Saturday, Nov. 24, at Hughes Spalding Hospital.
WSB-TV had reported that Weeks, who had bruises on his chest and thighs, suffered from cardiac arrest.
Sawyer, who lives in the 2000 block of Memorial Drive in the Parkview neighborhood, was watching the boy Saturday for his fiancée.
He told investigators that he took a nap with the boy and when he later awoke, he found the toddler unconscious.
A short time later, Sawyer sought help from a neighbor who tried to unsuccessfully resuscitate the little boy, before calling 911.
