It's An East Atlanta Eggstravaganza!

Brownwood Park in East Atlanta welcomes kids for Easter Egg hunt

Children, many clad in rain boots and spring colors, came out to Brownwood Park Saturday morning in search of Easter eggs and a fun time.

Despite wild winds and rain the night before, only a few puddles dotted the ground, and, for an hour, neighborhood children filled the park.

The annual Easter egg hunt, organized by the East Atlanta Kids Club, began at around 11 a.m. and continued with egg dyeing and other games until noon.

Children of all ages were invited to attend, although most seemed to be under the age of 4.

Makeisha Robey, the Kids Club program coordinator, said fewer people came than she expected, but she was happy with the event overall.

“I think it was a big success,” she said. “There were very few crying children.”

At 9 a.m., volunteers from Marist High School arrived to put out the candy-filled eggs.

Deanna Mauldin, a sophomore, said she helped out as part of her required community service and that it took them about an hour to hide the eggs.

“I’m glad it got a good turn out,” she said.

A few other parents thought the event was well organized and expressed happiness about the event being part of their community.

Valerie Swails, who lives in East Atlanta, found out about the event from an e-mail newsletter and invited her grandchildren from College Park.

“I want to get involved in the community,” she said. “That’s why I’m here.”

Robey hopes this fun activity will be a bridge for the community to use the Brownwood Recreation Center. The East Atlanta Kids Club serves as steward of the building and uses money from fundraisers, donations and rentals to pay to keep the building open, recreation center officials said.

The Easter egg hunt is the first public event of the year for the East Atlanta Kids Club. The club  will have two or three others, including a bike rally in May and an event for Halloween.

Martha Brown United Methodist Church and the East Atlanta Village Church also sponsored this year's Easter celebration.
