A promise made is a promise kept.

Before the end of the last school year, the residents of Peoplestown extracted a promise from the students of D.H. Stanton Elementary: Keep the neighborehood's parks clean to reflect their pride in their community and they'd be rewarded.

On Friday, neighborhood and school boosters rewarded the Stanton students with Morelli's Ice Cream as a reward for doing their part in keeping Stanton and Four Corners parks clean and tidy during summer break.

"This is their reward; this is for the kids," said Gregory Burson Sr., president of the Friends of Peoplestown Parks.

But the ice cream social was more than just a reward for a job well done, he and others said. It's part of the school's mission this year to foster and develop leadership skills in the children as part of The Leader in Me program.
