It takes a community to grow a garden in East Atlanta Village.

The rhythmic shwoo—fwoop, shwoo—fwoop of the shovels sliced through mounds of rich dirt. The clink-clank of pickaxes splitting concrete coincided with the whirring hum of drills boring holes in wooden posts.

These were sounds filling the air Saturday morning as members of East Atlanta's Brownwood Park Community Garden, Park Pride and Turner Broadcasting employees got together to expand the garden by adding new plots.

The project which doubles the garden is part of a community-giving initiative connected to the legacy of Martin Luther King.

It was originally set for mid-January but the snowstorm that blanketed Atlanta nixed it until the last two week-ends.
