An Atlanta police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a late-night deadly shooting in Inman Park.
The shooting victim, whom police did not identify, was suspected of breaking into cars behind 429 North Highland Ave. off Washita Avenue.
The responding officer, told homicide investigators that he saw the now-dead man in the parking lot and the two became involved in some altercation leading to the shooting.
The victim, a man believed to be in his early- to mid-30s, died at the scene in the incident, which occurred around 10:50 p.m., police said.
"The officer received abrasions as a result of the altercation. Atlanta Police Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and are investigating the incident," Officer John Chafee, an Atlanta Police Department spokesman, said in a statement, noting the investigation is ongoing.
"At this time, evidence indicates that the suspect did enter a vehicle at the location. Detectives are working to confirm the identity of the suspect."
A gun and screwdriver were recovered at the scene and Chafee told East Atlanta Patch investigators believe they belonged to the victim.
As 2 p.m. Thursday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office had not yet identified the victim.

It is standard operating procedure to place an officer on administrative leave following the use of deadly force. He's still getting paid, but they have to complete an investigation to determine that his actions were appropriate and unavoidable under the circumstances before returning him to active duty.

It's far from sad for the officer. That officer had to do what he had to do to go home. At the end of the day, that what matters. Not what you think nor anyone else. It's about making it home to his/her family. Those guys have less than seconds to react to the threat. You guys should do a ride along to see the mess they put up with everyday. I have much respect for these guys. I love to hear a good legitimate quality police shooting. You have to send a message to people. It isn't a game out here in these streets.

I know the illeged "victim". I use that term loosely. He was all of 5'2" and 130lbs. Has never used a gun in his life. Not saying he didn't fight with the officer just saying there was probably no reason to shoot him unless the police officer couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper sack

If this guy was a lowlife enough to spend his nights targeting and preying on citizens, it's fair to assume he's lowlife enough to grab the officers gun and use it against him if he got the opportunity. I'm glad the officer didn't wait around for that to happen. The police and citizens need to take the streets back these POS creeps, who have become all too comfortable pillaging Atlanta neighborhoods.

It doesn't matter how big or small the victim is. Every officer's threat level is different. If the officer can't fight his way out of a wet paper sack, guess what?! His reason to use deadly force is much different than other officers. One thing for sure, the guy should not have been fighting with the officer from the beginning. That's his fault, he asked to get shot.
Concerned about police brutality... You need to be more concerned about these filthy hoodlums that we have running around the streets of Atlanta. The courts give officers the right to use deadly force when reasonable and necessary because they literally have seconds to choose between life and death. Unfortunately, from time to time we have dumb dirt bags like yourself you don't care much about those giving their lives every FN day to save your @$$.

These so called "Thugs" your talking about are probably the same "Thugs" that broke into my condo and stole over $20,000 worth of firearms. If the APD would do their FN job, they would set up cars through out neighborhoods in that area with keys left in them and do some FN detective work. The detective that came to my home was a complete FN moron and should have stayed at Dunkin' Donuts. I know who the girl is that set me up, where she lives now, her parents live, aunt and uncle, where her sister is in school and her little felon cousin Bryce is. I had all that information in 15 mins. as the "CSI Team" was still dusting my back door for fingerprints. LOL

Before you start shitting on officers, how about you do a few ride-a-longs to see how tough their job really is. It's pieces of shit like you that make good officers not want to police much in East Atlanta. I'm appreciative of these guys. These guys go to work every single day not knowing if they're going to make it home or not to their families. You should be a little more thankful for these guys willing to put their lives on the line taking upon a thankless job.
Now if that 5'2 130 little mofo would have car jacked someone and probably shot and killed someone, first thing you wanna yell is "Where was the police?" "Why weren't they around?"... Now that the officer got there in time to catch the scum bag and kill the idiot for putting the officer's life in jeopardy, you wanna be concerned about police brutality.

@Nicoli... Did you see the person take it? Do you have camera footage? Or you're just going off of a hunch... If so that won't fly in court that's why APD and the CSI didn't pay that info any attention. Without any evidence, witness etc your "hunch" about who did it is useless.
Do you have an alarm system or any type of security systems put in place? If not I'd advise you to do so... Policing goes both ways. You can't set yourself up for failure then expect for the police to clean up your ignorant ways :)
