Officer was shot at near Moreland and McLendon avenues.

UPDATE: Atlanta police arrested Cameron Christian Maddox, 19, on Friday and charged him with aggravated assault in the shooting of Officer Dexter Toomer. Police said they would not elaborate on a motive for the shooting or release further details because the investigation is ongoing.

Atlanta police are looking for a gunman who shot at an officer Thursday night as he left the Zesto's restaurant in Little Five Points.

Officer Dexter Toomer, who had gone to the eatery at 377 Moreland Ave. for a drink, called for aid, saying he had been shot in the lower left leg.

He did not see who shot him in the the 10:30 p.m. incident.

Toomer, who spent 18 years as an Atlanta Corrections officer before joining APD 1½ years ago, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is in good condition, Maj. Keith Meadows APD Zone 6 commander told East Atlanta Patch.

The officer is expected to be released Friday.

Though police have no leads on a suspect investoigators believe the Toomer was the intended victim of the gunman, who fired shots from a nearby building.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404.577.TIPS (8477).

It was part of a description of someone whom the police might have been looking for in n earlier version of the story. But subsequently, police tell me the don't have a detailed description.

I like reading Patch but the often racist comments and even many subtle racist remarks make me irritated. There is no indication of what the shooter was wearing in the story.

Zestos is actually at the corner of Moreland and McLendon. I was making a right turn onto McLendon last night (Thursday) around 7:30 pm. An officer was arresting 2 men who were visibly angry and agitated. I don't know any of the details but wonder if this was connected to the shooting at 10:30 pm?

Hi, Mary Alice: The police said the arrest to which you're referring is unrelated to the shooting. You're right about Zesto's. Euclid becomes McLendon after crossing Moreland.

This story makes no sense so far. The guy shot the officer from a nearby building for no reason? Interested to learn more and how they caught him if the officer did not see him. Obviously a witness saw it. I wonder why not attempted murder charges?

They're being pretty mum on this so far, KR. They said it was intentional, but haven't said why or how it is they know that. We'll see as things develop.

Just talked to someone who went to school with the guy.. evidently this cop had arrested his friends with drugs so this was a revenge shooting.
